Peak District Bridleways Survey 2017

Posted on May 22 2017
The Grafton Hunt >>

Attached are the results of the first ever national survey on the impact of offroading on horse riders. The results show that offroading is creating access and safety issues for riders nationwide.

At present the British Horse Society does not accept that offroading is a safety and access issue which they should be tackling. We believe this indifference to offroading as an issue means they are failing to represent the interests of the many thousands of riders and BHS members whohacking out and who need access to safe, local riding routes away motor vehicles.

If your members  feel strongly about offroading, please consider contacting the BHS to explain the impact which offroading is having on equestrians and ask the BHS to take up offroading as an important access and safety issue.

National campaign
Motor vehicles can use legally in England the 3,000 miles of unsealed routes classified as Byways Open to All Traffic (BOATs). They can currently also use a further 3,000 miles of green lanes known as Unsealed Unclassified County Roads (UUCRs) - these are the tracks shown on the OS map as Other Routes with Public Access (ORPAs). Our own bridleway group is part of a national campaign pressing for new legislation to classify the 3,000 miles of UUCR as Restricted Byways and for greater use of Traffic Regulation Orders to exclude motor vehicles wherever necessary from the 3,000 miles of Byways Open to All Traffic.

Best wishes and I hope you find the survey results of interest
